Shakespeare and the Literary Heritage

I am going to explore how Shakespeare and Rudyard Kipling who done “A Song in a Storm”, and Persy Bysshe Shelley who done “Ozymandias” have used literary techniques in their own poems to communicate their ideas which link up about fate.

The first thing that I am going to discuss is, how metaphor’s are used in Romeo and Juliet and this is by, in the play there is an example where their is a use of metaphor’s and it is the idea of fate linked in. The quote “He that hath the steerage of my course, direct my sail! on lusty gentlemen.” is a particular quote that is a metaphor and I can tell that because, this quote means that. Shakespeare is referring to Romeo as a ship by saying ” direct my sail” and that means direct my ship and direct my pathway. It is also saying that, the captain in the ship is like god and they are also saying that Romeo is having to follow god so that he goes to a pathway which is the right one for him. Romeo believes that God is making the choice which is to take Romeo to the Capulet’s party and that Romeo’s life is in the hands of god.

The next thing that I am going to explore is how metaphor’s are used in the poem “Ozymandias” written by Persy Bysshe Shelley and in the poem there is no metaphors and this is because, Persy Bysshe Shelley is talking about the destruction of the statue and that is linked into fate and she says things in the poem that are metaphorically speaking with words that are like metaphors.

Then I will discuss how metaphors are used in the poem “A Song In The Storm” written by Rudyard Kipling and in the poem there is a use of metaphors and one of the quotes that has a metaphor in them is ” These mindless waters work As though they had a soul”, and we know that this is a metaphor because, it is saying that water is like a mind which is a person/ human being and it is also saying that the water had a soul which is also linked to humans.

In Romeo & Juliet, A song In The Storm, and Ozymandias it is quite evident that there has some sort of link to it and that is, when the three authors are using their poems/ plays to get some sort of feeling of the idea of fate and that is linked throughout the whole play/poem.

There are some really good literary techniques that are used in the poems/play and one of the literary techniques that I am going to explore is iambic meter/ pentameter in the poem Ozymandias through fate. Fate is shown in Ozymandias through iambic meter by inferring that there is an endless beat that are underneath the words in the poem. In Ozymandias’s there is iambic meter throughout this poem and the line that I have picked out that is connected to fate, but also an Iambic meter and that line in the poem is “And on these Pedestal these words appear.” This is an iambic meter because when you say the word like a clock goes round it has Rhythm and it has a memorable beat which always gets stuck in your head. “And on these pedestal these words appear” suggests that it is connected to fate because, it is saying that Ozymandias’s time is almost up and that, he is coming to the end of his life and that one day he will have nothing left to live for anymore.

Fate is shown in A song in the storm through Iambic meter by referring it to a clock and you will never know what you are faced with and what is going to happen next. In A song in the storm their is iambic meter and pentameter throughout the whole of the poem and the line that i will explore and talk about is ” The game is more than the player of the game and the ship is more than the crew.” This is iambic meter/pentameter which has a beat and rhythm. “the game is more than the player and the ship is more than the crew” suggests that this is connected to fate because, it is talking about the individual is more than the game and the ship is more than the people that are in the ship.

Fate is shown in Romeo and Juliet through Iambic meter/pentameter by saying that the beat are having an affect on the words in the play. In Romeo and Juliet their is iambic meter/pentameter throughout the play and the line that I am going to explore that is a iambic meter/pentameter but also is linked to fate and the line in the play is ” A plague a’ both your houses! they have made worms’ meat of me. I have it, and soundly too your houses!. This is iambic meter/pentameter because it has rhythm in the words and it has a beat. The line  ” A plague a’ both your houses! they have made worms’ meat of me. I have it, and soundly too your houses!, suggests that this is connected to fate because, it is stating that Mercutio will put a curse at Romeo’s house, and that curse will come to haunt Romeo one day and eventually in the course of the play Romeo is on the receiving end of the curse.

Finally I am going to explore how Volta is being used in Romeo & Juliet, Ozymandias, and A Song in a Storm. Volta has been used in Ozymandias by, it changes the emotion and the feeling of the poem when it says ” And on these pedestal these words appear.” This one line is a dramatic change in thought and feelings by, Ozymandias’s Life would change for the worse because, he soon will not have a life anymore and the things that he owned would soon be turned old and dusty.

Volta has been used in A Song in a Storm by, I think by this line ” Be well assured, though in our power is nothing left to give” And I think that this line/quote has the sense of feeling of change because, the people that are on the ship are basically saying that by having all the power that we have, we can’t be able to use the power efficiently and in the right way and we can’t win anymore. This then tells me as the reader of the poem that they have given up on what they have and that they think that ” whats the point?.”

Volta has been used In Romeo & Juliet by, I think when Romeo meets Juliet at the party and they have a little connection and then they have a little kiss and that I think is where it changed the whole story because the families of Romeo and Juliet didn’t like the fact that they might be together and they started a war and the two families should do anything to make sure that Romeo and Juliet should not be together and at the end they both died together in each other’s arms and that was a sad moment and both of them thought il that it would end the way it eventually did and they thought that it would end the way that they would ride of into the sunset of you like and they would live happily ever after but it didn’t turn out that way.

All of the poems that I have looked at, especially the play of Romeo and Juliet has been about fate. In all of the poems, and the play of Romeo and Juliet, there has been links which ends up with someone dying. And that can be because of fate because, if you make a wrong decision then you will pay the price for it at whatever costs.

Now and Then

Old Trafford

NOW

It’s a sunny afternoon with the sun blazing on every cut green grass on the pitch. You can see the shining light reflecting on the Stratford end and it has a feeling of that this is going to be a great match for the fans. You can hear the united fans in the home stand near the Stratford End, And they are chanting the team before and after the match. They are singing footballers names to get the team going. You can hear the guy at the start of the match telling the team news for both teams before the match starts. You can hear the united fans singing our song before the match starts. You can see 75,000 red seats in the stadium surrounding everyone and you can see the commentators box where they sit and talk about the game. You can see the united clothes shop just outside of the stadium. You can see the Man United kits staring at you on the window. You can touch the cut clean grass before the game and the seats that surround you with all of the fans in a jam-packed stadium.

I can touch the united kit that I have got on. It’s smooth and it has a feeling of victory. I can touch the feeling of having a hot dog before the game with ketchup and mustard dripping from my mouth. You can smell the people who are sat next to me in the stadium who have perfume and aftershave on and the smell is delicious and refreshing. I can smell the premier league trophy as soon as I see the trophy cabinet, it smells like victory.

You can taste the sweet success that the club have had at this football stadium for many years and you can taste the champagne when they are celebrating after winning the premier league trophy. You can taste the sensation of the whole atmosphere in the stadium and it feels electric, with the whole place buzzing. Also you can taste the fresh air with the weather nice and sunny and, the sunshine glowing in people’s faces with laughter and joy about the match that will commence.

THEN

You can see the 75,000 empty seats that surround you. You can see the sky which is grey and dull with rain pouring down on the pitch. You can see the empty Stratford End with barely no-one in it. Also you can see the empty directors box and you hardly see hardly anyone in the stadium. You can’t hear nothing and it is like being in a dark room with no noise or nothing. You can’t hear the voices of the united supporters, the only thing that you can hear is total and utterly silence. You can’t touch the shirts of the football players when they throw it at you. You can’t touch the players as they are celebrating scoring a goal at the Stratford end. You can’t see the statue of Sir Alex Ferguson because it is pitch black. You can’t see the excitement of the fans when they are cheering on the team, and when the match started it felt electric. Now it feels like the electricity in the whole stadium has been cut off and all you can see is emptiness and you can’t see the sun blazing on the stadium, but you can see the pitch black sky with lots of rain.

You can’t feel the electricity that the fans bring when it is match day and you feel lonely with no-one there beside you. It feels like you are in a movie where you are in the woods and someone is chasing you but you can’t turn to someone when you are in trouble and it feels exactly like that. You can’t taste the excitement in the stadium and all you can taste is the saltness of the rain dripping down your face and you can taste the tears dripping down from your eyes because your team has lost the game to their own rivals at your home stadium.

And finally you can’t smell the sweet success that you know that you have beating your rivals at your own stadium, whereas all you can smell now is the bitterness of the lose to your nearest rivals and that beats down on you. You then feel ashamed that you have to go school when you know full well that you are going to get hassled by your friends about your team’s performance.

I Can Tell You Now

I can tell you now, the thing that gets me angry and frustrated is when the school has certain rules that are set to make sure that the pupils follow them and when they don’t. When a teacher says top the pupil “If you back chat me again I will get on call to send you out of my class for this period!!”  the teacher doesn’t do anything about it after they have already said what they was going to do. This can make me angry as the teacher doesn’t act on what they say and they are not having the full authority that they need to have in order to act on what they said. Some teachers don’t even follow through at all.

When we have cover teachers we get given work that we have done already and, supply teachers can be a bit inpatient with other students as when they do a little thing wrong like not having their shoes. The student is then trying to explaining to the supply teacher in why they don’t have their school shoes and they tell you that they will bring in a note the next day to explain the reason why they don’t have their school shoes. Then the supply teacher keeps asking them to get a note and they can’t bring a note for the reason they just explained.

The other thing that gets me frustrated is when, certain students are not listening to what the teacher is telling them and they have to keep asking stupid questions which they don’t need to ask. It’s as if they are making them self look stupid when they are really aren’t. I don’t like it when the teacher has to keep repeating themselves because, if they already said it once then they don’t need to say it again.

Some teachers can be a bit boring because they don’t always see the fun in things that seem like a joke to us as students, but the teacher’s view is that they won’t find it funny. Some teachers can be strict with punishment because, when a student has done something wrong like e.g. Knocking over a display in the library, the librarian instantly shouts at the student who done it. The student puts his hands up in the air and apologizes straight away but, the librarian gives out a yellow card for it and I feel that the librarian shouldn’t have given out a yellow card because it was only the first time that he had done it. He should have had a warning in my opinion, plus with a bit of a talking too but it would’ve been sorted quickly without any hassle. This type of punishment is really not called for as when this happens, it doesn’t affect them. By this punishment, they would always carry their coats around inside school anyway.

I can tell you now, that the second thing that can get me angry is when my team Manchester United are losing to a team that they shouldn’t lose to. When my team doesn’t play to what they are capable of, what happens is that I start to swear at the TV and then I let my feelings known to the TV. It is just a spur of the moment thing and I can’t control it. Sometimes it can be the manner in which we lose like e.g. We lose 2-0 but we didn’t have a single shot on target. That can frustrate any fan of any football team in the world.

When people are always trying to compare the two teams e.g. Manchester United & Manchester City. People always talk about the future of the two clubs but they don’t always talk about the past of the two clubs because, some of them weren’t even born when the two clubs have won some things. They don’t even know the history behind the two clubs and what has happened to the two clubs before they were even in the premier league or “first division” as it was called when it first started. Some people who are true football supporters would know what sort of trophies the two clubs have won and if you are a football supporter and you support a team just because that specific team is the best team in the world then I think that personally you shouldn’t support that team.

Bare Vexed

This is a response to the article that Isabelle Kerr wrote called “Bare Vexed.” I disagree with what she said about some of the reasons why some slang words that have been used are in the Oxford Online dictionary. I disagree with what she is saying about how some of these slang words like ” wicked”, “sick”, “fugly”, “butters”, “twerking”, and “vom”, are misspelled words and that they are in a “seemingly foreign language”. Even though Isabelle Kerr is saying that slang is in a foreign language, as a 16 year old male who is a member of the younger generation I can say that I understand what these words mean and without these words the younger generation would be lost and confused. My argument would be to defend the younger generation and to tell Isabelle Kerr that she is stopping the development of how the younger generation communicate.

In your article you state that these new slang words  “simply promulgate an unhealthy culture.” and do not improve and “express ourselves”. However, if we look at the example of yolo, this slang word have been used by the younger generation to express the feeling that one should enjoy life, even if that entails taking risks. The phrase is similar to carpe Diem and it is a way of communicating with other people from the same generation. Yolo is therefore a way of expressing a feeling that there is no other word for it, so then would you rather a 16 year old male say ‘Carpe Diem’ as a way of expressing ourselves or would you rather us say yolo instead.

In your article you say that the slang words used by the younger generation are giving out the “wrong impression”. In my opinion I think that by having these slang words it gives the young people a chance to develop and practice a skill which is to use different types of language and to communicate by using different language. Eventually they would need it for when they become adults. All the slang words that the younger people use nowadays are creative and they bring out a totally different side to the younger generation and it makes the older generation thankful for the younger generation because some adults even say some of these slang words as a laugh and a bit of a joke and I bet that they wouldn’t even have been thinking of these clever slang words.

The last thing that I am going to talk about is the last sentence of the article where you mention that  “Shakespeare will be turning in his grave” What I think is that, Shakespeare wouldn’t turn in his grave because, I think is that he would be congratulating the younger generation and he would be saying ” these younger people are almost inspiring the next lot of the generation to make new and creative words for all of us to use. You must be barking mad to even contemplate Shakespeare turning in his grave. I feel that as part of a society where the younger generation are always trying to think and find ways in which they can use a variety of slang words, some of the slang words that people use is modern everyday language.

To conclude this argument, I would say that Isabelle Kerr is ludicrous and that she might not live in a society full of young people and if she doesn’t know what the slang words mean then she doesn’t need to say anything. She is part of a future who is gonna keep on developing and developing new words and in all honesty, if you don’t like the fact that the youth uses these slang words to communicate with other youths then she just needs to keep quiet. I have presented and stated the facts from your article and I can safely say that, once you get the chance to read this, you will change your mind and you will see what difference it would make for the younger generation to get creative. It breeds new words and it shows the quickness of thought from the younger people. Slang has almost been around for 100 years and that just shows how much slang has progressed throughout the 100 years in which slang was invented. It gets the younger kids to be very imaginative and it also shows a wide range of the vocabulary that the younger generation possess. It is really good to see and I hope that you, Isabelle Kerr can get to grips with how the younger generation can almost speak their own mind. It would be good to have these clever and thought out words to be on the Oxford Online dictionary, then it would make the dictionary a bit modern and a bit original for society to enjoy these words.
